Arrr You Ready? How to Plan the Best Pirate-Themed Treasure Hunt! Ahoy, mateys! Are you ready to embark on a swashbuckling treasure hunting adventure right in your own home? If you’ve got little pirates itching for some fun, a pirate-themed treasure hunt is the perfect activity to get them up and about.

Let’s jump in and look at how you can easily set up a Pirate Treasure Hunt that will have everyone shouting, “Yo ho ho!”
#1 Set the Scene:
Before the hunt begins, you’ll want to set the scene. Find some pirate music to play or, better still, a YouTube video with sounds and video.
Get your pirates feeling like they’ve truly sailed the high seas and stepped onto a deserted island in search of treasure. Throw in some pirate-wanted posters or other suitable decorations.

#2 Pirate Party Rules:
The first thing I do, especially if I’m hosting a treasure hunt for a birthday party, is to set up some pirate ground rules.
For some reason, when my kids were given a treasure hunt task, their normal, sensible heads disappeared, and they turned into little whirlwinds of excited energy.
#3 Add Costumes and Props
Encourage everyone to get dressed up in their favorite pirate costumes! Pirate hats, eye patches, and swords are a must.

Create a station at one of the clue locations where the pirates get to stop for a moment and make their own pirate hats.
Print out some hats onto white card and have them color them in. I love adding creative ideas like this to my treasure hunts, it turns a regular hunt into a really special event.

#4 Prepare Pirate Treasure Hunt Clues:
The clues are the heart of any pirate-themed treasure hunt. To make things easier, you can grab my printable kit! It includes 12 ready-made clues plus an editable template, so you can customize the game.

Here’s an example of some of the clues:
- “I’m Piratey-proud, I have to admit. The next clue is hiding, where pirates like to sit.”
- “Arrr, you’ve done well! Now off to where we feed, look inside the fridge for the next lead.”
- “Yo Ho my hearties! Here be another clue: To find the surprise, Ye must seek out something blue!”
The editable template included is great if you want to change the order or tweak any of the clues to add
# 5 Hidden Treasure
Who says the treasure has to wait until the very end? Add an extra moment of excitement by hiding one of the clues in a tray of sand at one of the locations. Let the players sift through to uncover their next clue and maybe a few surprise goodies too.
Some chocolate gold coins or bullion bar boxes with treats inside. It’s a simple touch, but kids love the idea of finding a little “loot” during the hunt, not just at the finish.
#6 Challenges
Add some pirate-worthy challenges along the way! When they complete the challenge the players earn their next clue
- Walk the plank: Player walk on a piece of wood balancing from one end to the next.
- Have them throw canon balls into buckets to earn points (water balloons).
- Cannonball toss; Line up some cans and players have to know them all down.

# 7 Don’t Forget the Treasure!
The actual hunt grand finale should be a treasure chest packed with awesome prizes. Fill it with whatever your little pirates would treasure: stickers, mini toys, pirate bandanas, chocolate gold coins, or even some pirate-themed books.
Grab A Treasure Chest
Craft or buy a treasure chest and fill it with the ultimate pirate booty, prizes, candy, coloring books or pirate rum (a bottle of pop with a label on it lol)! The treasure chest is the final destination, so make sure it’s worth the hunt.
Download my free treasure chest box; it works great as a party favor box. Print out the treasure box onto bright white cardboard on your home printer and fill it with treats.
