A Wizard Treasure Hunt: A Puzzle-Based Game for Harry Potter Fans

Are you a fan of Harry Potter? Do you enjoy puzzle games? If your answer to both questions is yes, then this wizard-themed treasure hunt is perfect for you!

I wanted something a bit different from the usual rhyming clues, so this treasure hunt is all about puzzles and simple ciphers instead. It’s inspired by the magical world of Harry Potter and is designed to get players thinking, decoding, and figuring things out as they go. Easy to set up, fun to play, and great for anyone who loves puzzling things out.
Getting Set Up (It’s Easier Than You Think)
You don’t need much to get this wizard treasure hunt up and running, which is always a win. All you’ll need is a printer, some paper, the printable clues (you’ll find those at the bottom of this post), and a surprise prize to finish things off.

Top Tip: Print the clues on white card just so they hold up a bit better. Regular paper works perfectly fine if that’s what you have to hand.
As for the prize, this is where you can have a bit of fun. Anything wizard-themed works brilliantly. How about a chocolate frog or box of every flavour jelly beans? A small goody box filled with treats is going to be a winner. How about using this treasure hunt to announce a trip to Harry Potter World!

What Kind of Clues Are Included?
Instead of sticking to rhyming clues, this treasure hunt leans into puzzles and simple ciphers. It’s designed to get the wizard treasure hunters thinking, decoding, and piecing things together as they move from one clue to the next.

Here’s a peek at the types of puzzles included:
- Morse code
- Braille
- Maze puzzles
- Picture cipher wheel
- Polybius square
- A wizard alphabet I created just for this game
These puzzles work especially well for tweens, but younger wizarding fans can absolutely join in too. They might just need a little nudge in the right direction here and there. It’s one of those games that naturally turns into a team effort, which makes it great for family play.
And yes, it’s fun first and foremost, but it also sneaks in problem-solving and logic skills along the way. Not a bad bonus.
A Brilliant Idea for Birthdays (and More)
This wizard treasure hunt works really well as a birthday party activity, but it’s just as good for a sleepover activity, a rainy weekend, or for something fun to do during the school holidays.
Because everything is printable, setup is super quick. There is nothing you need to prep for this game other than hiding the clue cards at each location.

There are also blank clue cards included, which is handy if you want to add an extra location or personalise the hunt a bit more. If there’s a special hiding spot in your home, this makes it super easy to include it.
What’s Included in the Printable Kit?
When you download the wizard treasure hunt, you’ll get:
- A PDF with 12 wizard-themed puzzle clues
- Clear game instructions
- An envelope for the final reveal
- A player certificate
- Gift tags
- Blank clue cards for custom locations
- A handy planning sheet to map out your route

Everything’s designed to be easy to follow, even if this is your first time setting up a treasure hunt.
What locations are included?
There are twelve ready-made clue locations included, plus blank cards so you can add your own. The clues don’t need to be played in a set order, which makes it easy to plan a route that works best for your home.
Some of the included locations are everyday objects, so you can move them around as needed. The ready-made locations included in the wizard treasure hunt are:
- Computer
- Window
- Clock
- Closet
- Mirror
- Sock
- Shampoo
- Fridge
- Backpack
- Table front
- Door
- Coat
This flexibility makes the game feel custom without creating extra work for you.

How Long Does the Treasure Hunt Take?
On average, the wizard treasure hunt takes just over an hour to play. That makes it a great fit for birthday parties.
The exact timing will depend on a few things though:
- The age of the players (kids 8 and below may need help with the puzzles)
- How many players you have
- How spread out your clue locations are
Short on time, you can always omit a couple of the puzzles. If you see the players stuck at any point, jump in and offer some clues. If you want to stretch the game out, spreading the clues across more rooms or adding an extra pause for snacks works really well.
More Wizard Party Ideas
If you’ve ever hosted a party where guests arrive in waves and take a while to warm up, this is a lovely way to break the ice and get everyone chatting.
Before the treasure hunt kicks off, have the guests find out their wizard name. It gets everyone into character straight away and gives them something fun to do while everyone arrives.
I’ve created a free printable wizard name game that works perfectly alongside this treasure hunt. It’s quick and easy to set up, making it ideal as a party warm-up or even a calmer activity before the hunt begins.
