Setting up a pumpkin scavenger hunt

Getting everything set up for this Halloween hunt can be done in minutes!  Seriously, it’s super simple:

  1. First, print off the free set of pumpkin clues and the tick sheet.
  2. Second, choose your hiding locations. You can play at home, in your back garden or my favourite, in your neighbourhood. Place a pumpkin in each location.
  3. Next, have a final prize or candy stash for the end of the hunt as a prize.

Now you’re ready to start the pumpkin scavenger hunt!

How to play at home

Set up the scavenger hunt by placing the pumpkins at different locations in your home or garden. Players can find the pumpkins in any order; they will just need to record the letter they see on each pumpkin onto their answer sheet.

I wanted to make this super easy for us parents; therefore, there are no complicated bits’n’bobs to cut out, just pin up the pictures in each location.  Of course, you can up the difficulty and hide the pumpkins to make them more challenging to find if you really want to.

To get your kids started,  hand them the pumpkin answer sheet and send them off searching for their first pumpkin. You can offer them a clue on the location if you are feeling generous.

When the players have all the letters to the pumpkins, they will reveal the word ALAKAZAM. You can then give them a little prize as a reward. Since there will probably be an abundance of candy and sweet treats, perhaps a family date night to see a movie would be a fun prize.

How to play in your neighbourhood

If like me you have some fab neighbours this would be a great activity to play on Halloween. Give a different pumpkin to display at each house. When the kids go around trick or treating they can record the letter found on the pumpkin at that house.

Make sure to print out plenty of answer sheets. There are two different sizes included in the free scavenger hunt kit, a full 8.5 x 11 page and two per page. You can print out multiple answer sheets to accommodate the number of players you have.

What Prizes can I use for the end of the hunt?

Let’s face it that kids love candy so that has to be on top of the list. However I know that there will be a heap of candy flying around. You can always bundle up some fun Halloween colouring pages and a pack of crayons for an easy option. Or how about some of these fun alternatives?
