Christmas is all about spending time with my family and friends. Sharing good food, sipping on something tipsy and of course playing games.  One of my favourite activities is setting up a Christmas escape room at home. It’s great to spend time together without a TV on and enjoying some screen-free fun. I remember how long it took to plan and set up my first ever Christmas escape room, I don’t mind telling you it took me FORVER! It was a huge hit but oh man it was a lot of hard work.

Christmas Escape Room Game Ideas

Start off by planning your escape room story. This is the fun part and can spur on lots of fun ideas as you get into planning your game. Here are a few ideas to get you going.

  • Home Alone – You’re home alone and need to solve puzzles to set up traps to stop the thieves.
  • The Grinch – Can you help grow the Grinches’ heart by spreading some festive cheer?
  • The nutcracker – Save the ballerina from the Mouse king
  • The 12 days of Christmas – Take inspiration from the famous song, solving 12 themed puzzles.
  • A Christmas Carol – Set the game in a Dickens’s winter wonderland. Create four puzzles to solve representing each of the ghosts Ebenezer Scrooge meets.

How Many Puzzles Do You Need?

The answer to this question is simple. Have as many puzzles as you want! If you are planning your first escape room aim for 5 puzzles. The aim is quality not quantity! You can make a really simple puzzle more exciting by including locked boxes and incorporating other activities to help solve the puzzle

Picture this: you set your friends on a quest to find all the ingredients needed to bake a delicious Christmas cookie. But here’s the twist – the recipe is sneaky and written in a secret code! To crack the code and unveil the recipe, they must first unlock a special box by solving a simple math problem. Once they’ve got the key to solve the secret code, that can finally decipher the recipe and embark on a thrilling search for hidden ingredients scattered throughout the room.

Here’s the fun part – each ingredient comes with a letter attached to it. As you uncover all the ingredients, a word will be revealed. And guess what? That word holds the key to another puzzle for you to solve!

Do you feel the excitement building? This simple puzzle will have your friends fully engaged as they search for clues and unravel the secrets to the rest of your game.

Throw in atmospheric some music, some snacks and voila you have something a bit special.

Included is a game guide, completely separate from the “Print and Play” game, so there are no spoilers.  For the DIY kit there is a full guide which does explain the puzzles. I have also created a printable lock kit so you can really go to town with your game. The extra clues in the lock kit help you hide clues inside locked boxes with simple puzzles. Combine one or two of my ideas and really make the game your own. Add in some locks and voila your very own Christmas escape room at home.
