Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and what better way to show your affection for family, friends and significant others than with a unique and creative Escape Room Hunt?

Whether you’re searching for ideas to keep your kids entertained leading up to Valentine’s Day or looking for something just a little special for the family to do, an escape room hunt could be exactly what you are looking for.
Get ready for some puzzle-solving fun as I share how you can get started making this festive game come alive in the comfort of your own home, no Cupids required!
Who is this Valentine’s Game For?
This game is for everyone! I went all out Valentine’s-themed for this game, 100% full on cute mode, so kids are going to love this. Don’t be fooled though, its cuteness is no reason it can’t be used by us adults too. Use the game as a fun way to reveal Valentine’s goodies for your significant other.
Everyone is going to love the Valentine’s escape hunt. They will be deciphering codes, solving puzzles, and following clues leading to more puzzles to solve.
If you plan on playing with young kids, younger than six, I would recommend you be there to help if they get a little stuck. Make it a family activity with everyone, old and young, getting stuck into working together to reveal the Valentine’s treasure at the end of the game.
What is an escape room hunt?
So I’m sure I didn’t invent the whole concept lol, but I’m going to take credit for it, hahaha. In essence, an escape room hunt is a hybrid between an escape room and a treasure hunt.
Instead of boring rhyming clues leading you around the house, each clue is a mini puzzle similar to what you may find in an escape room. As you solve each puzzle you reveal a new location to go to.

Instead of escaping, you are trying to find the treasure. In the case of this Valentine’s Day escape hunt, your treasure can be some Valentine’s treats.
What puzzles are in the game?
There are over 14 different puzzles included in the Valentine’s escape hunt game. They range from a simple word search to decoding secret messages. Unlike a treasure hunt, the clues are not set in a particular order. So if you don’t want to use one of the clues, just keep it out of the game. You have the freedom to pick and choose the puzzles and clues you want to play.
Valentine’s Cipher Wheel Clue
I love including a secret message that needs to be decoded using a cipher wheel. They are a lot of fun to use as they are so tactile. I like to use a split pin through the middle so the top wheel can rotate freely.

For this Valentine’s clue, the players discover a message written in a funny-looking text. Using the strawberry decoder wheel the players reveal the hidden message.
To make this clue more challenging, especially for older players, split the clue into two parts. Here is an idea on how to set up this clue:
- First hide the decoder wheel inside a locked box. Use any kind of lock you have lying around at home. I used a number combination lock.
- You can either hide the box somewhere in the room or place it next to the other half of the clue.
- Before the players can decode the message they will need to retrieve the cipher wheel from inside the box.
- Use one of the extra mini lock clues included in the kit to reveal the number or location of the key to open the lock
Don’t overthink this part; you can make it super simple. Even just writing a clue on the back of the message card is going to work a treat. It just adds another little task to do before the players can go ahead and solve the puzzle.
Cupids Hearts Reveal Puzzle
One of the simplest puzzles I created is an overlay reveal puzzle. It is super simple to do. There are two halves to the puzzle; when overlayed one on top of the other, a message is revealed through the little love heart cut-outs. It is so simple but so fun.

Want to add another layer to this Valentine’s escape room puzzle, I would have the two halves either hidden separately in the room for players to find or, better still, lock one half inside a locked box, bag, or container.
Top Tip. Use an Exacto knife to cut out the hearts first, then cut out the card. I also recommend printing the game onto bright white card just to make it a bit more durable.
Cupcake Code
The Polybius Cipher is a simple but clever way of hiding messages using a 5×5 letter grid, often called a Polybius Square. Each letter is swapped for a pair of numbers that show its position in the grid. To make everything fit neatly, the letters y and z share a space. For this game i replaced the numbers with cute valentines themed pictures.
To crack the code, players use the picture pairs as coordinates. One picture for the row and one for the column, and match them back to the correct letter on the grid. It’s easy to get the hang of, feels satisfyingly secret, and is a great way to add that “real escape room” moment to the game.

Other Clues
As well as traditional rhyming clues, I’ve also included a few activities where the players need to search for hidden items, following paths to lead players to clues and popping balloons to reveal secret messages.
There is a nice variety of puzzles included, a little something to get everyone excited and involved in the Valentine’s Day game.
Where can the game be played?
Because this game is a mix of a treasure hunt and an escape room, I’ve kept the clue answers nice and flexible. Most of them point to everyday spots or objects you’ll already have around your home, so setup stays simple.
I’ve also included three adaptable puzzles, which means you can change the answers to suit your space. Want to send the kids outside? Go for it. Got a fun hiding place or object in mind? You can easily build it into the game.

How long will it take to prepare?
When I set up this game, from start to finish (printing and cutting out the clues), it probably took me about 45 minutes to an hour. That’s with setting everything up at each location, adding locks to some of the puzzles, and hiding all the puzzle clues.

If you use all the clues in this game, you can expect it to last well over an hour. Use everything in the kit, including adding the extra lock puzzles and you have a decent length game.
You can make the setup as simple or as complicated as you want. You can keep it super simple with just the clues placed at each location.
