Easy Reindeer Treasure Hunt for Kids

Last year, I put together this Christmas treasure hunt for kids for one of my oldest friends, who has two of the cutest little’uns. One was becoming a great little reader and the other just learning. My friend wanted a game where both kids could get involved in the game. So that’s exactly what I did.

I found some super cute pictures of reindeer and then set about putting together a cute treasure hunt. Of course, I added some extra printable bits and bobs because, basically, I can’t help it!

If you are new around here, I adore treasure hunts. They make any gift-giving experience even more exciting. Kids love them, I love them, and they are so easy to set up. Christmas is a great time to host a treasure hunt. They are a great way to keep the festive spirit going. I used to have my clues leading to craft activities, tickets to a pantomime, a movie night, some Christmas treats or a new outfit for Christmas day. The possibilities are endless.

The reindeer hunt turned out really well. The story is that Santa has lost his reindeer and the children have to help him find them all. The rhyming clues lead the children all over the house until they finally find Rudolf. The game is pretty easy to set up as I’ve done all the prep work for you. All you need to do is print out your clues and hide them.

What’s Included in the Reindeer Hunt

  • 8 rhyming reindeer clue cards
  • 8 single word clue cards
  • A Santa card to start the game.
  • A Rudolf card to end the game and hide with the treasure.
  • Task cards
  • Reindeer gift tags
  • Mini Printable tree
  • Backing paper

When I put this Christmas treasure hunt together, I made two different versions. One version uses rhyming clues and is great for older kids. The other is made just for young readers and uses a single words to lead the children to their next destination.

One of the clues leads the children to a Christmas tree. I know that not everyone puts up a tree so I thought of that, too and included a little printable tree in the treasure hunt kit.

What are the clue locations?

This treasure hunt is designed to be played at home. Christmas eve would be the perfect time to play this game!

Clue locations:

  • Kitchen
  • Bed
  • Christmas Tree. (there is a paper Christmas tree included).
  • Trash
  • Fridge
  • Front Door
  • Shoe
  • Mirror
  • Under a Table

There are four clue cards per 8.5″ x 11″ sheet. If you want to save ink, go ahead and choose to print two sheets per page. They print perfectly onto A4 paper (that’s the paper size I use); choose the option “fit to page”.

For a professional finish, choose a bright white card stock to print out your clues. You’ll also find a backing sheet; run your clue cards back through the printer. Laminate them, and you will have them for years to come.

Mini Treasure Hunt Gift Ideas:

When I set up a treasure hunt, I usually add goodies to find at each location. You can have small pocket money gifts: a mini colouring book, pencils, crayons and a super cute Christmas reading book or other goodies. I have added some gift tags featuring the same reindeer characters that you can add to the mini gifts. Here are a few ideas that you can add to your treasure hunt.

I love this little hunt, and my friend had a blast with her little ones. She set up the treasure hunt on Christmas Eve. The final treasure was the kid’s Christmas Eve box filled with goodies. She had hot chocolate sachets, a film to watch, some cute Christmas PJs for everyone and other little treats and goodies. Apparently, the kids loved the hunt and wanted to play it again. That means it’s a success and makes me one happy bunny!
