Christmas Escape Room

Christmas is all about spending time with my family and friends. Sharing good food, sipping on something tipsy and of course playing games. One of my favourite activities is setting up a Christmas escape room at home.

It’s great to spend time together without a TV on and enjoying some screen-free fun. I remember how long it took to plan and set up my first ever Christmas escape room, I don’t mind telling you it took me FORVER! It was a huge hit but oh man it was a lot of hard work.
Escape Room Story
Santa and his elves have been poisoned. A Rogue elf has been up to no good, trying to sabotage Christmas! Santa awoke to find he’s been locked in his office and everyone else is in a deep sleep. You have been tasked to discover the combination to the lock on the door holding Santa captive.
How Long Does Set Up Take?
The setup time really depends on how much you want to lean into the experience. If you’re keeping things simple, use the print-and-play game. It’s ready to play right out of the printer. This is a great option if you are looking for a low-effort activity but still feels special. Great for us busy mums!
If you want to go all out and create an epic adventure, you can easily spend 30–45 minutes or more setting things up. Print out the extra lock clue included and lock up part of the puzzles, hide clues around the house and throw in some props for a festive touch.
There’s no right or wrong way to set the game up. Keep it simple of go full on festive escape room the choice is yours.

Print and Play vs DIY Setup
If you want the easiest possible setup, choose the print-and-play approach. Print the game materials and lay them out on a table. That’s it.
If you’re using the DIY-style setup with hidden clues, expect around 15 minutes to cut out the game material and further 10 minutes to place the game pieces, plus extra time if you’re adding props and locks.
How Long Does the Game Last?
Gameplay typically takes 50–60 minutes, depending on the ages of the players and how many hints they need along the way. It’s long enough to feel like a real adventure without taking over the whole day. Keep in mind that the more players you have, the quicker the game will be completed.
What’s Included?
Everything you need is included in the kit. Choose which version you want to play and then fire up the printer.
- Print and Play Christmas escape game. – Great to just print out and place on a table top.
- DIY Game – same game but without the background graphics. Print the puzzle pieces and set up the game in advance for a real escape room experience.
- Game Guide – Use this to help you set up the DIY game. Lots of tips on how to hide and add locks into your game.
- Printable Lock Kit – A few simple puzzles that can be added to your DIY game to help you add locks.
- Selfie Posters – You cant do an escape room without a selfie at the end.
What Puzzles Are Included?
The game has seven main Christmas escape room puzzles, each designed to use a different type of thinking. Some puzzles focus on logic and problem-solving, while others involve searching for information, which makes it inclusive for younger players.

Each main puzzle piece is numbered, but not every clue piece is labelled. Players have to work out which clues help solve the puzzle, adding an extra layer of discovery. This is where you can have fun hiding pieces in boxes, tucking them around the room, or spreading them out to create a proper Christmas puzzle hunt.
Love this idea? But looking for an escape room for kids… you’ll love this peppermint town escape room game.
As well as the two version of the game, I have also created a printable lock kit. I love creating these additional printable so you can really go to town with your game. The extra clues in the lock kit help you hide clues inside locked boxes with simple puzzles. Combine one or two of my ideas and really make the game your own. Add in some locks and voila your very own Christmas escape room at home.
Who Is This Game For?
Escape rooms are for everyone. This game is no different. It works really well for families looking for some festive fun spent together. This game is for you if:
- You enjoy creating fun traditions but don’t want to design games from scratch.
- You need something ready-made that still feels thoughtful and creative.

One of the nicest things about this game is that it creates a shared family moment. And everyone feels like they’ve done something a little bit different this Christmas. Players from 8 to 108 can all join in together with the game.
Make Your Home Feel Like an Escape Room
One of the nicest things about running an escape room at home is that you can make it as simple or as festive as you like. Even a few small tweaks can turn a printable game into something that feels properly immersive.
If you’d like to add an extra layer to your Christmas escape room, here are a few easy ideas that work well without adding stress.
Use Your Home as Part of the Game
Instead of keeping everything on one table, scatter clues around the house. Slip them under cushions, behind picture frames, inside books, or tucked into Christmas decorations. A quick tip that saves time later: make a note of where everything goes before you start. It’s surprisingly easy to forget once the game is underway.
Add Boxes, Ribbons, or Simple Locks
You don’t need fancy equipment to make clues feel exciting. Any box, envelope, or even a Christmas stocking can become part of the puzzle. Tie things shut with ribbon or tinsel, or add a small lock if you have one. Opening something always feels more satisfying than just picking up a piece of paper.
Turn It Into a Mini Treasure Hunt
You can send players from room to room by using riddles or short clues that lead to the main puzzles. Some families like to hide puzzle pieces separately so players have to find and gather the clues before they can start solving. It’s a good way to get little ones involved too.
Try Invisible or Hidden Messages
If you want a bit of extra magic, invisible ink is always a hit. You can hide messages that reveal codes or hints using UV ink. A small black light torch instantly makes players feel like proper investigators.
Let Christmas Decorations Do the Work
Because it’s a Christmas game, chances are your house is already set up perfectly. Fairy lights, decorations, stockings, and themed props all help create atmosphere without any extra effort. Sometimes the simplest setup feels the most magical.
Finish With a Small Christmas Treat
When the final puzzle is solved, a small surprise makes a lovely ending. The posters included in the kit are also perfect for a quick post-game photo to capture the moment. Who doesn’t love a selfie!

Ready to Play? Here’s What Comes Next!
The game itself does all the heavy lifting, and you’ll only need a few simple, everyday supplies to bring it to life at home. Nothing fancy, nothing you need to buy specially. As for the extras to pimp up your game, you may already have them tucked away in a drawer. Once those are ready, you can focus on the fun part of setting up the puzzles and watching the adventure unfold.
Supplies Needed:
Below are the supplies I recommend to get the best out of the Christmas escape room printable! You probably have most of these at home already.
