Summer Escape Room Story
You’ve landed in the charming beachside town of Sandy Dunes, ready for the annual Summer Festival. But there’s a snag—Crabby, the town’s beloved mascot, is locked up, and the code to unlock the box is missing! Your task is to find the 3-digit code to free Crabby and save the festival. Time is running out. Work together, think quickly, and let the summer escape room adventure begin!
The Fun of an Escape Room at Home
I love the experience of going to an actual escape room; you can’t beat it. But let’s face it, an hour at an escape room for a family can be expensive. Not to mention, trying to get booked on short notice over the summer can be one heck of a task. So why not try this super easy-to-set-up version?
- Convenience: No need to drive to a physical escape room location. Everything you need is right at your fingertips.
- Cost-Savings: Traditional escape rooms can be pricey, especially for larger groups. A ready-made game is a budget-friendly option that is still fun.
- Engaging for Kids: These games challenge kids in a fun way. They’ll solve puzzles, crack codes, and work together. It’s like a mental workout disguised as play.
The fact that you can set this game up anywhere is an added bonus—the garage, the garden, and even camping! The convenience alone makes it a no-brainer for lazy summer days. Plus, kids of all ages can flex their brain muscles while having a blast. It’s a win-win in my book!
What’s Included in the Summer Escape Room Game?
You’ll find a treasure trove of fun and engaging puzzles inside the summer escape room game. Let’s break down what’s included.
Themed Puzzles and Challenges
The heart of any escape room game is its puzzles and challenges, and this game doesn’t disappoint. I’ve added a variety of different puzzles. Some will be solved a lot quicker than others, but that change of pace is what you want. You still need a little challenge but want some quick ah-ha moments, too.
There are twelve puzzles of varying difficulty. Each answer will reveal a word that players must write on their answer sheets. The puzzles can be played in any order. So here are some clues as to what types of puzzles are included.
- Coral Reef Code – letters are represented by a grid system that players need to decode.
- Number, letter substitution. A fun puzzle where the numbers on a phone pad are converted into letters.
- A grid picture code. Players need to plot points on a grid.
- “Sandy Dunes picture code. Instead of an alphabet, little icons are used to spell out words.
- Double letters. It’s just a matter of removing everything that’s duplicated!
- Decode three statements to remove unwanted words.
- Pattern sequence – follow the pattern to reveal the correct encrypted word.
- Simple maths is used to reveal numbers; the numbers represent letters!
- Hidden letter. Coordinates are given to reveal letters in a piece of text.
- A directional keypad, simply follow the path!
- Plus a few more!

How Long Will The Game Last
This is a tricky question because everyone sets up their game differently. The summer kid-friendly escape room game should last a minimum of 30 minutes. That is about 2.5 minutes per puzzle. Some will take a little longer, and others may be quicker to solve; it really depends on the players’ skills and whether you hide the puzzle pages. You can make the game last longer by including locks in your game. If you are just looking for a quick and easy activity, just print everything out and set it up on a table. I know it’s not the best answer, but I hope it helps!
How Many People Can Play??
I get asked this question all the time about printable escape games. There is no perfect answer. On the whole, when setting up a game for my kids, I would have no more than eight players at once, just for practical reasons. This game, however, is so easy to set up that you could have multiple teams playing all at the same time. This makes it perfect for camp activities or even in a classroom environment.
How to Set Up Your Summer Escape Room
Setting up your summer escape room game is easier than you think. With minimal prep, you can play in less than ten minutes!
Download Print and Play
First things first, let’s get you set up. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you through:
- Download the Materials: Download the summer escape room game. P
- Print the Puzzles and Props: Once you’ve got the materials, print them out. Make sure you have enough ink and paper. I like to use bright white paper, as it gives the best results. There are nine game pages in total to print out. The kit includes player certificates, gift tags, and photo props. These are just added extras if you want to include them.
- Read the Instructions: Before diving in, take a moment to read through the game guide.
- Cut and Prep: Use scissors to cut out the puzzle pages. There are two puzzles per 8.5×11 page. That’s really it!
- Set Up the Space: Choose the room or area where you want to set up the game. Place the printed materials around the room, or just put everything on the table for more simplicity!
- Brief the Players: Gather the family and explain the rules once everything is set. Ensure everyone knows the objective, and they can get hints if they get stuck.
- Start the Clock: Set a timer to add a bit of pressure and excitement. Voila! You’re ready to play.
With these simple steps, you’ll have everything ready to go. It’s as easy as downloading, printing, and setting up—a total breeze!
Tips for Creating an Immersive Experience
Now that you’re all set let’s talk about how to make it even more immersive. You want your family to feel like they’re on a summer adventure, right? Here are some tips to get that immersive experience:
Background Music: Play some themed music in the background. Tropical beach sounds or festival noises can make the atmosphere feel more real. I love going to YouTube and finding a video with a soundscape to play in the background.
Themed Decorations and Props: Decorate the room with items that fit the theme. For example, think beach towels, inflatable palm trees, a beach chair, buckets, and spades. You can also use these props to hide some of the puzzle pages.
Inflatable palm tree drinks holder: This prop can be used for so many different things. Here are a few ways you could incorporate this into an epic escape room. Start off with filling the holder with water, sand, or even floristry beads. They are also fun just filling with ice to keep drinks cool! Available on Amazon
- Take several pop bottles and decorate them to look like they hold a secret message in a bottle.
- Place one of the clue pages inside one of the bottles, in the rest place decoy pieces of paper, with messages like “try again” “note this one” etc
- Place one of the clues inside a locked box, bag or container and then hide the key or the lock code inside one of the bottles.
- Again lock away one of the clues. This time write the code to open the box using a UV pen. Pop a mini UV torch inside one bottle and the code to open the box in another.
Props and Costumes: I love fancy dress, and if you really want to go to town, why not dress the part?
Interactive Elements: Integrate small activities like “digging” through a box of sand for clues or “fishing” for a key using a magnet and string. These little touches make the game more engaging. I also love including locks. I have
Locks: All the puzzles are done for you. You can add an extra layer to the game by including locks. Any lock you have lying around can be utilized. All you need to do is choose one or clues from the kit to lock away and then give players a hint on how to open the lock. You can write a message in code, or my favorite is to use sweets. I have a free printable lock code kit that will work perfectly with this game.
Transforming your home into an escape room doesn’t have to be complicated. This ready-made kit and a little creativity are all you need.
Printable Materials for Easy Setup
One of the best parts about the summer game is the ease of setup.
- Ready-to-Print Puzzles: No need to spend hours preparing. Just print out the puzzles, and you’re good to go.
- Game guide and hints: The game includes a guide that answers frequently asked questions and hint cards for players who get stuck.
- Photo Props & Certificates: At the end of the game, you’ll want to capture a selfie. I’ve included some photo props and certificates as a bonus.
- Two Reveal Options: Players can scan a QR code to enter their answer online, or my favorite option is to use the 3-digit answer as the code to an actual lock. I love using these affordable locks.
Setting up this escape room game is as simple as hitting ‘print.’ It’s a breeze for parents, grandparents, or even scout leaders to set up, which means more time for everyone to enjoy the game. This is great when you are looking for a quick last-minute activity.
No one has to stress about complex setups or finding extra materials. Just print, cut the puzzle pages in half, and dive into the fun!
