What do you need?
To make these fab Halloween treats as shown you will need the following:
- Meringue recipe (below) to make the ghosts.
- Cello bag (I used the Wilton treat bags)
- The free treat bag printable.
Meringue Ghost Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 large egg whites room temperature
- ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 225F (105C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt in a large bowl.
- Using a mixer or a stand mixer, stir on low speed until mixture becomes foamy.
- Increase speed to high.
- With the mixer on high, gradually add the sugar, roughly 1 Tablespoon at a time.
- Beat until mixture is thick, shiny, and has increased in volume. The mixture should have stiff peaks and sugar should be completely dissolved and not gritty at all.
- Stir in vanilla extract.
- Pipe into ghost shapes onto the prepared cookie sheet. The meringue wont spread so you can pipe them quite close together.
- Bake on 225F (105C) for 1 hour. Turn off the oven once the baking time has passed, and DO NOT open the oven. Leave the oven door closed and allow them to cool completely before removing them.
- In an airtight container, the meringue ghost treats will last a good week.
ASSEMBLING YOUR MERINGUE GHOSTS TEAT BAG
With your meringue ghost baked and cooled your ready to start assemble. My daughter used a round treat bags from wilton and created the circle backgrounds to fit perfectly. Download the printable, which includes instructions and the recipe for the meringue ghosts, at the bottom of this blog.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE
- Print out the free treat bag backer.
- For the best image, print out onto bright white card.
- Cut out the circle image and place it inside the bag
- Choose a meringue ghost to pop inside and seal the bag.
- To tidy everything up, use the Halloween tag to wrap around the bottom of the cellophane bag. Fold it around the bottom and seal it at the back.
To add an extra touch, add some bat-shaped sugar sprinkles to the bag or mini marshmallows.
Feel free to fill the treat bags with any kind of goodies you like not just meringue ghosts. My daughter made a whole batch of ghosts and some pretzel skeletons to take to school. However, my son and his friends couldn’t resist eating most of them before she had a chance to take some photos. Despite that, she did an amazing job, and according to Josh (her brother), they tasted great.
I hope that you will give this one a try. With a little bit of effort, you can make these treats, and they will make great party favours. If you make these cute ghost treats, I would love to see them. Go ahead and tag me on Instagram, so I see your creations.
