The game is perfect for teenagers and adults, probably not for kids, but with a few tips and pointers, they could figure out the clues. Inside the envelope, you’ll find a few puzzles that vary in difficulty. This isn’t a game for hardcore escapers, this is a fun way to give a gift with a few puzzles thrown in. It shouldn’t take longer than ten minutes or so, depending on the player’s logical thinking skills.

I actually made this one for my hubby’s recent 45th Birthday. We don’t really get each other gifts but I this year I did get him a rather lovely rubber beard-washing doh-dah that set me back a whopping £1.50 lol, and I wanted to make it a bit more fun to open. It took him about ten minutes without any hints, and he laughed his socks off when greeted by the immense gift contained inside. It was a winner so I was happy about that.

What is included in the kit?

  • The birthday letter.
  • An Envelope with clues on.
  • Two gift tags, one with a QR code if you don;t want to use a physical lock
  • A decoder wheel
  • A picture to be cut up into a puzzle.

What Clues are included?

The letter contains a few different clues. The players will see that some of the letters in the text a written in bold font. Starting from the top of the page and reading down, it reveals a message “The order is small to large”. This tells the players the order to put the numbers they find.

The next clue uses both the envelope and the letter. On the envelope, there is a series of numbers and a hint that reads “surprise = 2.11”. This is a coordinate to that word in the letter. The word is found on the second line and is the eleventh word. The rest of the numbers are also coordinates. Starting from the first set of numbers and following down, a message is revealed. It says “count all the candles”. The only place you can see any candles are on the stamps on the envelope. This will give the players one of the digits they need.

The next puzzle is found on the flap of the envelope. It is a simple message that reads “the happiest of birthday wishes sent to you”. The message itself is unimportant, BUT the different symbols underneath the letters in the message are what the players need to take notice of. When figured out, the players must add three and two to give them their second number.

The final puzzle is a really simple decoder wheel and picture puzzle. The puzzle isn’t cut up in the kit, but you can cut up into as many pieces as you like. I cut mine into about seven bits and popped them into the envelope with the decoder wheel. When decoded the images on the puzzle will reveal the number eight.

What you need for the gift reveal

You don’t need anything fancy, some bright white paper, a printer, scissors and my printable kit. These items would be helpful to add to your game, a three-digit lock to lock up the birthday gift and a split pin for the decoder wheel. They’re not essential but fun to include. I bet you probably have a three-digit lock lying around, but you can grab ones for the beloved Amazon; the links are below!

As I mentioned earlier, a three-digit lock would be a great addition, but, you don’t need one, as I have enclosed a QR code gift tag. The player can enter the three-digit number online, and it will reveal if they have the correct answer. When they do, they can then open their gift.
