Escape rooms are so much fun. A gang of friends embarking on an adventure together, solving puzzles, following clues, and firing up those brain cells. I just love them. They can be expensive though! Here is where my free birthday escape room game comes to the rescue.

I started making games when my son was little. His big sister had been invited to an escape room birthday party, and he was desperate to go! So I started making them. Over the years, I’ve made games for all occasions, but it hit me that I haven’t created a birthday-themed game. So here it is, enjoy.

Will you solve the mystery. Birthday escape room game page examples

Birthday Escape Room

There are six puzzles in this escape game. Plus a lock kit to help you add in extra mini puzzles to open locked boxes. The players can solve each puzzle in any order. Each puzzle is identified with a different colored candle.

When the players have solved all the puzzles they will use the answers they get from each to solve a simple math problem. The answer reveals a three digit number 594. I would highly recommend using a three digit lock as your final reveal. If you don’t already have one they are super cheap to purchase. Here are some locks available on Amazon.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE KIT?

My free Birthday Escape Room has six puzzles to solve. and included a few extra printables to add an extra layer into your game.

  • There are six different puzzles to solve. The game is ten pages in total to print out.
  • Includes a printable lock kit. The kit has five mini tasks that you can use to add real locks into your game.
  • There is a matching “Happy Birthday” party banner. The banner matches one of the clues.
  • The is a simple game guide to get you going.
  • You have the option to have the final reveal as a three-digit code entered online, or, my favorite option, a real three-digit lock.
  • Gift tags to use for extra clues or for party favors.

Use the free Birthday Escape Room as a way to reveal a special birthday gift or perhaps some party favors. Use a three-digit lock to lock everything into a box. The final number the players discover will open the box to reveal their goodies.

WHAT AGE IS THE GAME FOR?

The game isn’t going to break your brain cells! It is a bit of light-hearted fun so anyone, I would say 8+ will have fun playing this. Kids may take about half an hour if you add in the extra lock puzzles. You can of course create more puzzles and even hide clues to make this more of a challenge. Adults will complete the task a lot quicker but it is still a fun way to reveal a birthday surprise.

Puzzles Included

There are six main puzzles to solve. In total there are ten pages to print out for the game. Each puzzle is identified by a different colored candle.

six puzzles to solve

Yellow Candle Puzzle

This puzzle is in the form of a birthday card. You will need to cut out the card and fold it as directed. Either display the card somewhere for players to find or you can use the printable envelope included in the kit and give the birthday card to the players to open.

The puzzle itself is nice and simple. On the back of the card there are sets of three numbers. The first number represents a LINE of text players read inside the card, the next number represents the WORD on that line, and the final number represents the LETTER in that word. When the players solve the puzzle it will reveal a number.

Orange Candle Puzzle

This puzzle is a bit like a mini scavenger hunt. Players need to find a set of ingredients listed on a recipe card. When I set up this puzzle I attached a card with each letter to the real ingredients. I had my kids find the ingredients in the kitchen.

Another option would be to laminate each of the cards with pictures of the ingredients and submerge them in slime. Players would need to fish out each card to solve the puzzle. Adding the slime inside a box or blindfolding the kids is hilarious as they fish around for the cards. For slime, I like to use something called “jellibaff,” or the floristry beads that swell in water.

Green Candle Puzzle

For this clue, you will need to cut out and assemble the banner in the kit. You will want to display this somewhere in your game room. The banner has symbols that need to be translated with the birthday code.

Birthday code puzzle

You will also find a matching Happy Birthday banner. Display both banners together. It took a little while for kids to notice the code on some of the pennants. If you see your players getting stuck, step in and offer them a clue.

Blue Candle Puzzle

This is a nice and simple escape room puzzle in which the players need to pop balloons. Before you inflate them, place the tags with the letters on them inside. If you have players who don’t like popping balloons, I would attach the tags to the outside for them to take off instead.

  • Have some decoy balloons that do not have any letters inside. I’ve used confetti before but be warned, it gets everywhere, lol.
  • Have the balloons outside and line them up for players to pop with darts like you would do at a fair.
  • Use the blank gift cards in the kit and use a UV pen to write the letters that spell the word seven on them. The players will then use black light to reveal the letters.

Purple Candle Puzzle

Players have to decipher three symbols on the yellow card. The same symbols are displayed on a wheel alongside other images. This is a very simple puzzle to solve. To make it more challenging, cut the card into pieces to create a rustic jigsaw puzzle.

Red Candle Puzzle

The player discovers the three gift tags with symbols on them. In this escape room puzzle, the players find the same symbols on the Polybius grid. Reading the symbols on the grid will reveal a letter. Here are a few ideas that you can use to make the puzzle more interactive.

  • Attach the three gift tags to party favor gifts. Have them displayed somewhere for players to see.
  • OR, Attach the gift tags to different boxes wrapped in colorful wrapping paper. Inside these boxes, you can hide some of the clue pieces from other puzzles for players to discover. Or perhaps use a UV torch to reveal letters in the candle clue.

Final Reveal

When all the free birthday escape room puzzles are solved the players will have a simple maths problem to solve. Nothing scary, you won’t even need a calculator for it, I promise! The answer will be a three-digit code. When you set the game up, you will have the option to use the three-digit code to set a real lock or use the QR code reveal. You will need to have internet acces to be able to use the QR code reveal. To be on the safe side check the QR code on your device before the start of the game. You can scan the code as many times as you need!
