If you’ve ever watched an adventure movie and secretly thought, “I could totally escape a booby-trapped temple,” then this treasure hunt is your moment. Grab your whip and join me on an Indiana Jones-inspired treasure hunt! Let’s uncover hidden treasures together and experience the thrill of the unknown.

This Indiana Jones-inspired printable treasure hunt is packed with puzzle-style challenges, secret messages, and some classic rhyming clues for good measure. Kids (and adults) get to think like explorers, not just running from room to room, finding clues.
You can keep the treasure hunt super simple or layer in locked boxes and obstacles to make it feel like an escape room adventure. The great thing about printable adventures is that all the hard work has been done for you!
What’s included in this treasure hunt?
Think old maps, hidden clues, and a little “did we just become archaeologists?” energy. The printable treasure hunt includes:
- A scroll-style first clue (dramatic reveal encouraged)
- Rhyming clue cards with an aged, ancient style
- Puzzle challenges kids must solve to unlock the next location
- Cipher-style secret code messages, including a pigpen cipher
- Optional task cards for extra challenges
- Blank cards so you can add your own clue ideas and locations
Everything is ready to print, cut, and hide. You can even lock clues in a box, tuck them in books, or hide them behind props to turn your house into your own temple of doom.
Adventure Treasure Hunt Clue Locations.
You’ll find a scroll to start the treasure hunt game. This will have your first clue on it. The first activity is a jigsaw puzzle. Players have to find the pieces and assemble the puzzle to reveal the next location.
The game includes clues designed for everyday home spots. If they don’t fit your home, just leave them out. I created the game so there is no set playing order, which means you can move the order around to suit.
- Shoe
- Under a Table
- Bedroom
- Mirror
- Book
- Shower or Bath
- Clock
- Fridge/Freezer
- Front Door
- Fork
- Washing Machine
- Chair
Mix them up, skip ones you don’t want, or add your own using the blank cards. Want to send players to the garden shed, a sandbox “dig site,” or the dog’s treasure-filled bed? Go for it.
Starting the Hunt: The Adventure Scroll
The treasure hunt begins with a weathered scroll telling players they must find pieces of a missing map. Roll it up, tie it with twine for that authentic feel, and leave for player to find. It would be great to dim the lights and surround it by candles (the fake tea light would be fab), tuck it under a “stone” or have them dig it out from a tray of sand.

Tips for setting up this clue:
- Hide the puzzle pieces around a room ready for the players to discover.
- If you want extra challenge, put a few pieces in a locked box and leave a clue on how to open it.
- The kit includes a blank version of the jigsaw map, so you can change the location (great if you want the puzzle to lead outdoors).
Rhyming Treasure Hunt Clue Cards.
I went for a rustic feel to the clue cards, they look like they’ve survived thousands of years, complete with distressed edges and burn marks. Each page prints four clues at a time, so you can prep quickly.
I like to throw in task for the players to do while they work through the hunt. This works especially well for birthday parties because they slow players down and builds excitement. Think: “Earn this clue by completing a jungle run (a simple obstacle course set up in the garden).
You do not need to add tasks to your treasure hunt, but I like to add them in as a way of playing extra games at birthday parties.

Puzzles, Ciphers and Secret Codes!
This treasure hunt isn’t just about finding the next spot. Some clues use ciphers like the pigpen code, a symbol-based message that looks mysterious but is easy once kids crack the pattern.
This may look a little complicated, but it is deceptively simple. The letters are represented by the grids that surround them. If you are paying with younger children, you may need to give them some hints on how to solve this clue. I created a little video on YouTube explaining the pigpen code go check it out.
Follow the golden coins!
I’ve put together a few clues that allow you to add your own location. I like adding these in as you send players outside or lead them to unique areas of your home. Some of these clues will see a trail of coins leading players to a golden idol, or perhaps popping balloons to find gemstones that will lead the players to the next location.
There is a good assortment of puzzles and activities to make this treasure hunt one to remember. I have done all the hard work for you all that’s really left to do is print and cut out the printables. Don’t forget to add in some treasure for the end of the hunt!
Want More Adventure? Add Tasks!
Extra tasks turn your treasure hunt into a true explorer challenge. Place a clue inside a locked box and require kids to complete a task to earn the combination. For example, complete the “jungle run” obstacle course. You can get the players to complete the following:
- Balance over a “lava river”
- Dodge swinging boulders (aka water balloons swinging on a rope)
- Crawl through a spider web tunel (streamers placed along a hallway.
I like to add extra activities to my treasure hunts. This does mean that you have to get more hands-on with the hunt and not just leave the kids to it. The result is so much more enjoyable and memorable though.

Bonus Party Printables
There are some additional printables included in the Indiana Jones-style treasure hunt. If you’re planning a themed birthday party, the kit also includes:
- Editable Party Posters
- Welcome signage
- Water bottle wrappers
- Party gift tags
How To Set Up Your Treasure Hunt
Give yourself a little prep time. Here’s the quick setup process:
- Download and print the treasure hunt.
- Cut out the clues, puzzles, and optional extras.
- Hide clues in the matching places around your home.
- Add props to set the scene, old maps, vine décor, toy snakes, lanterns, even a plastic whip on the table.
- Add music or ambient adventure sounds in the background. Head to YouTube for some great videos that you can set playing in the background.
TOP TIP: Bright white paper or cardstock will make the printables look sharp. You’ll get a great finish.
If you love themed props, you can find rubber snakes, explorer hats, and fake torches at party stores or online. Add one or two and the adventure vibe instantly levels up. So, with your music playing, and the scene set, your props adorning the house, it’s time to enjoy the hunt!
