Create an escape room party at home

Just imagine the fun of playing an escape room at home, where kids can solve puzzles all on their own. There are secret codes to crack and cool puzzle pieces to stash around your play area! What a perfect base for an epic birthday party game! And you know what’s even better? You can jazz it up with extra activities, locked boxes, and rooms to make your party the talk of the town (or at least the envy of other parents)! Get ready for one supersized, super-fun adventure!

One evening, the museum’s night security guard, Mr. Jenkins, was doing his rounds when a brand new exhibit arrived—a mysterious old chest, sealed with golden locks and covered in strange symbols. Mr. Jenkins, always curious, couldn’t resist taking a peek inside. But as soon as he opened the chest, POOF! A cloud of rainbow smoke filled the room, and out sprang a mischievous Djinn! Be careful! The Djinn loves puzzles and tricks. He’s hidden clues all around the museum, and only by solving them will you be able to trap him back where he belongs.

WHAT PUZZLES ARE INCLUDED?

There are seven puzzles included in the printable kids’ escape room kit. Setting up the game is as simple as printing and placing the game material on a table! That’s great for a last-minute sleepover activity. Here’s a closer look at some of the puzzles included.

This is a fun tactile puzzle. The players cut out the broken vase pieces discovered in the ancient Greece display area.

I’m Thinking puzzle ideas:

  1. Lock the handle of the scissors shut! Oh yes! This is so simple but super fun. The players have to figure out the code to open their scissors before they can solve the game puzzle.
  2. Cut out the vase puzzle pieces in advance. I’ve included a DIY version of the puzzle so you can create your own puzzle. With all the pieces cut out, grab yourself a deep tray and fill with sand or packing beads. The goal is for the players to sift through the sand and retrieve all the pieces.

Sudoku Puzzle: I quite like sudoku. I wanted to add another layer to the game and decided to split the board into four pieces. The kids will need to figure out how to correctly piece together the sudoku grid before they can continue to solve the puzzle.

Sudoku puzzle ideas:

  1. Use the DIY version of the puzzle. Place the sudoku pieces inside a locked box bag or container. Then, using a UV pen, write the lock code or location of the key onto the coloured square. Kids love discovering hidden messages hidden in UV.
  2. Place the whole puzzle inside a locked box. To save time, use the print-and-play version and leave the cutting for the players to do.

You can’t have a museum escape room without featuring some T-rex bones somewhere! This puzzle features a dinosaur and hieroglyphs! Players must cut out and assemble the image; then lay it on top of the code sheet. This will reveal 7 hieroglyphs for the players to decode. There are a few layers to this puzzle which makes it great for hiding and adapting if you want to step it up a level.

Sudoku puzzle ideas:

  1. Place one part of the puzzle inside a locked box using a KEY. Then here comes the fun part. Using salt dough, create some dinosaur bones and bake the key inside one of them. The players will need to break open the bones to retrieve the key.
  2. Instead of using salt dough, create a bath bomb mixture and place the key inside.

DO I NEED TO ADD LOCKS?

Nope, you don’t need to add locks. The easiest way to set up the game is to place the game material onto a tabletop. But I’m guessing you want to take your game to the next level? I’ve got you covered. I created a printable lock kit. The best part? You can hide puzzle pieces in any box, bag or container to ramp up the challenge. Trust me, your players will thank you for the little bit of effort!

So are you ready to create an epic kids’ escape room, where the fun never ends? I’ve got everything you need: game materials, printable lock kits, and to top it all off, I’ve even made awesome certificates and celebration posters for those post-party selfies. These would double up as some fab party souvenirs.

How many kids can play?

Now, you’re probably thinking, “How many kids can play, and what’s the best age range?” Well, it’s not a one size fits all answer, folks! To make sure the game is a blast, consider the kids’ age and how well they work as a team. As a general rule, aim for 4-6 players – too many, and the game could be over too soon. I recommend no younger than 8-year-olds, but if you have younger kids, don’t worry – you can join in and play a fun character like the night security guard to offer hints and tips to the players.
