Magical Mermaid Treasure Hunt Party

All mermaid fans will love this fun and creative princess party treasure hunt game! With clues to follow, puzzles to solve, and treasure to be found. It’s a perfect mermaid birthday party activity for any little mermaid!

I don’t often make girly games, but I love girly stuff, especially when it comes to mermaids. One of my favorite films growing up was Disney’s The Little Mermaid; I’m a sucker for that animated musical!

Anyhoo, back to the game. This is a mermaid treasure hunt but with a little twist. In addition to traditional rhyming clues, I have also included some puzzle activities. I love a traditional treasure hunt, but the addition of puzzles and secret codes takes the game to another level. The kids love having that extra challenge.

The mermaid treasure hunt can also be used as a fun rainy day activity to ge the kids away from the screens or as a way to reveal a special gift or holiday vacation. All you will need to do is reveal the treat as the treasure at the end of the game.

Mermaid Puzzle Clues

These clues are a little different from your regular rhyming treasure hunt clues. They include a pigpen cipher code, a Polybius code, a hide-and-seek picture clue, a maze, and an overlay puzzle. I love adding puzzles to my treasure hunts. They are a lot of fun for the kids and make the game far more rewarding for the players.

Treasure Chest Puzzle Clue:

This clue may be a little tricky for younger players, so you may need to offer some help to solve this one. I have included two clue cards that you can choose from so you can make it easier for younger players. If you think this particular clue is too difficult, you leave it out of your treasure hunt, you do not need to use it.

I have called this a treasure chest code, but it is actually called a pigpen cipher. Each letter is displayed in a grid or pigpen, and the shape of the grid that forms around each letter is used to depict each letter.

As soon as players understand how the cipher works they will love creating their own secret messages using it. I have a whole blog post with how the pigpen cipher works and includes a free printable too. I go over in more detail about how the cipher works.

Find the pearls puzzle clue:

This fun puzzle involves the players searching for gift tags with pictures of pearls on them. Each pearl has two little icons that can be found on the clamshell. Each pair of icons represents a letter. When all the pearls have been found, the next location is revealed.

A fun addition to this puzzle would be to attach the tags to party favors or birthday presents. You can scatter the tags close to the clamshell picture for the players find, no need for the added gifts if you don’t want to.

More puzzle treasure hunt clues:

The mermaid treasure hunt kit includes a few more puzzle clues. There is a maze, a follow-the-path puzzle, and an overlay puzzle. These are all nice and simple to complete but add an extra layer of fun to your game.

I have created twelve regular treasure hunt clue cards, pick and choose the ones you want to use in your game. If you don’t see a location that you really want to include in you game I even have a blank template that you can use to create your own.
