Crafting A Scavenger Hunt Experience
Turning your home into a dino adventure starts with a killer scavenger hunt. The trick is to use my printable kit as a starting point and throw in some extra activities to keep the kids hooked the whole time. With some planning, you can turn this simple fossil scavenger hunt into an epic fossil expedition.
I love creating a special twist for my kids birthdays. A scavenger hunt can double up as a fun party activity for guests or you can use it as a creative way to reveal birthday gifts.
Printable Fossil Scavenger Hunt
Start off with a copy of my free printable fossil scavenger hunt. With 12 fossils to discover, you can set up inside or outside in a matter of minutes.
What’s Included in the scavenger hunt Kit?
- 12 rustic fossil illustration cards to discover.
- A player checklist for each ‘fossil’ they need to find.
The easiest setup is to use the dinosaur fossil cards as they are. Print them out onto bright white card and hide them around your home/garden for the players to discover. Now for all you busy folks out there this is the perfect option, super simple. But if you are like me, and love crafting fun adventures for your kids, consider knocking it up a level! How I hear you cry! Here are a few ideas to elevate my fossil scavenger hunt and get the kids really excited to explore and find more.
As a team, the kids can hunt for all the fossils and, along the way, come across some fun mini-activities. By throwing in a few tasks or fun stations, your kid’s party will be one to remember! Working together is going to be a great way to teach teamwork, but you can even use the activity as a race to see who will find all the fossils first.
Fossil Discovery Zones
Get creative with different fossil discovery zones to turn your space into a mini-dinosaur park. Here’s some fun ideas on how to do this:
- Fossil Dig Site: Set up a sandbox. If you want to get a little crafty, you can bake some salt dough fossils to hide in the sand. Let the kids have fun digging ‘em up like a real paleontologist. Don’t forget to include one of the scavenger hunt cards for the players to discover, too.
- Rocky Terrain: Utilise garden stones or foam rocks to hide your fossil card. You can buy secret key holders that look like rocks. This would be perfect to hide in the pile of stones or rocks with one of the picture cards folded up inside.
- Dinosaur Nest: Make a spot with faux eggs and nest materials. The kids open the eggs (plastic easter eggs would be perfect) and discover a key with a clue attached to it. It can say something like open the red box. Inside the red box place one of the scavenger hunt cards.
- Clue-Based Fossil Hunt: Set up a series of rhyming treasure hunt clues that lead kids from one location to the next. They can uncover a new fossil to mark off their checklist at each spot.
- Dino Footprint Trail: Use dinosaur footprint stencils or cutouts to create a trail leading to different fossil or excavation spots. As kids follow the trail, they’ll discover a hidden fossil.
These zones make sure that the kids get excited about discovering the picture cards. The kids won’t just scamper through quickly—they’ll engage and ultimately have a heck of a lot more fun!
Expert Game Tips
- Make it a competition. You can get the kids to take pictures of the scavenger hunt cards they find. Then, the first person or team to find all the fossils wins!
- Laminate the fossil scavenger hunt sheet. Give each player a dry-erase pen to use to write on their sheet. (you can use these over and over again!)
- Add some atmospheric music. Set the tone with some epic Jurassic park-themed music. A quick look on YouTube and you will find plenty of playlists to play on your TV.
There are so many fun things you can do for a dinosaur party, but a scavenger hunt is always a favorite in our family. If you are planning to use this for your kid’s next birthday I hope you have a blast and try your hand at adding in some of the extra activities to really make it pop.
If you want to include rhyming clues in your game, I have a fab vintage-looking treasure hunt bundle you can use alongside the scavenger hunt. It is a digital download, so you can grab it right away. There is a set of 24 locations in each kit, and I have an inside and outside set of rhyming clues available, which is a perfect addition to the scavenger hunt.
