Why You’ll Love This Halloween Treasure Hunt

This treasure hunt is designed with families in mind — no complicated setup, no special props, and no stress. Just print, hide, and play! You’ll get:

  • 12 rhyming clues that lead kids around a typical home.
  • A tracker sheet to record the order you choose for your clues.
  • A printable envelope for the first clue — the perfect way to start your hunt.

The best part? You can mix and match the clues however you like. The first clue is always the same (it leads to the fridge), but after that, you can create your own order to suit your home and your players’ ages.

How to Set Up Your Halloween Treasure Hunt

It’s super easy! Just print out all the clues from the free printable kit, hide them around your home, and hand players the first clue to get started. Each rhyming clue tells them where to go next, like the fridge, sofa, or bookshelf, until they reach the final location where their Halloween treasure awaits.

If you have younger children, keep the clues visible or in easy-to-reach places. For older kids, you can make it trickier by hiding clues for extra suspense!

  • Print out all the clues and the tracker sheet. The tracker will help you remember where you hid each clue (trust me, it’s a lifesaver when you forget which clue leads where!).
  • Start with the first clue. Place it in the printable envelope included in the kit and hand it to your players when the game begins.
  • Hide the remaining clues. You can hide them in plain sight for younger kids, or tuck them away for older players to make it more challenging.
  • Set up the final prize. At the last location, place the Halloween Treasure Hunt suprise. Candy, a Halloween craft, or even a “Movie Night” coupon.

Halloween Treasure Hunt Clues

Here’s a look at all 12 clues, plus ideas for where and how to hide them to keep things fun and easy.

Free Halloween Scavenger Hunt Clue #1

“Welcome, brave hunter, your quest has begun.
Ghosts are watching, try not to run!
To start your quest, don’t be afraid,
Check where the cold food has been laid.”

Where does the clue lead?: After reading the riddle, players have to figure out where the clue is suggesting for them to look. In this riddle, players are directed to go to a fridge or freezer, somewhere food is kept cold. It’s okay for the players to check either the fridge or the freezer.

Go where you sleep at the end of the day.
Search your pillow, soft and deep,
That’s where the next clue likes to sleep.”

“You found it! Now don’t be slow,
Look where clean clothes like to go.
Tumble and spin, round they race,
Check the machine in the washing place.”

Where to hide it: Tape the clue inside the door of the washing machine or place it on top where it’s visible.

Halloween Clues for Kids #4

“Creepy footsteps at the door,
Witches, monsters, maybe more!
Before they enter, and look down low,
This object hides what you must know.”

Where to hide it: Slip the clue just under the corner of your welcome mat. For younger kids, have the clue card sticking out to spot easily.

Halloween Hunt Clue #5

“Creaks and squeaks may give you a fright,
But this is where you’ll scrub up right.
Wash your face and clean your hands,
The next clue waits where the basin stands.”

Where to hide it: Tape the clue under the bathroom sink counter or place it behind a soap dispenser. Just make sure it stays dry!

Halloween Scavenger Hunt Clue #6

“You’re doing well, the hunt’s on track,
Now find the shoes in a tidy stack.
Before they walk and hit the floor,
The next clue hides where shoes are stored.”

Where to hide the clue: Tuck the clue inside a shoe, for a little Halloween fright, place some plastic bugs inside.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt Clue #7

“The monster growls, ‘Go take a peek,
Where you watch TV shows each week.’
Search the cushions, soft and wide,
That’s where the clue will like to hide.”

Where to hide it: Slide the clue between sofa cushions or under a throw pillow.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt Clue #8

“You found the clue, you’re doing great,
Now check the room you grab a plate.
Forks and spoons will rattle too,
Look inside the drawer, something is waiting for you.”

Where to hide it: Place the clue inside a cutlery drawer. Throw in a few plastic bugs for a creeping surprise.

So many tales you’ve yet to learn.

The next clue hides upon the shelf.”

Peek behind the rolls of white,
The next clue’s hidden out of sight.”

Scavenger Hunt Clue #11

“A haunted kitchen, dark and grim,
The cauldron’s cousin hides within.
Open the door where things get hot,
This is the next hiding spot.”

Where to hide it: For safety, tape this clue on the outside of the oven door — not inside! You can decorate it with a paper flame or “Beware: Witch’s Cauldron” sign.

Halloween Treasure Hunt Clue #12

“Zombies groan and goblins grin,
They sit right here to dig right in.
Where spooky suppers fill each seat,
This place hides your trick-or-treat!”

Where to hide it: Here are a few ideas for you. Tape the clue under the table, place the prize on top of the table, hidden inside a black Halloween cauldron.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the treasure hunt take to play?

It depends on your setup and how sneaky you make it! Most families finish the treasure hunt in about 20–40 minutes, but you can make it last longer by spreading the clues out or adding mini challenges (like a puzzle or question) between clues.

If you’re using it for a party, you can divide players into teams and have them start in different spots to make it a race to discover the treasure, making it even more exciting!

What ages is this Halloween treasure hunt best for?

This printable Halloween treasure hunt is designed for kids around ages 6–12, but it’s flexible enough for the whole family. Younger kids can play with a bit of adult help reading the clues, while older children will enjoy solving the rhymes and racing around on their own.

You can also adapt it easily for older kids by putting some of the clues inside locked boxes. Provide extra puzzles or clues that need to be solved first in order to open the boxes. I have a great blog post about making your own escape rooms for kids. There are a lot of tips that you can use to pimp up this free Halloween treasure hunt.

What do I need to play the game?

  • The free printable treasure hunt kit (which includes the clues, tracker sheet, and clue envelope)
  • A printer and scissors to cut out the clues
  • Bright White cards stock makes the prints really pop
  • A small prize or treat to hide at the end

That’s it! No extra supplies or fancy decorations needed, though I do highly recommend adding some Halloween props or spooky music just to set the Halloween vibe.

Can I change the order of the clues?

Yes, and that’s one of the best parts! The first welcome message clue is fixed, it leads to the fridge but after that, you can choose any order you like. Use the tracker sheet included in your download to record where each clue goes. You can even skip clues that don’t fit your home or mix them up for a different adventure each year.

What can I use as the treasure or final prize?

You can get creative with this! Candy is always a hit, but you can think outside the box and get creative:

  • A craft kit (like materials for making these fun ghost meringues)
  • A Halloween movie-night voucher. Sit down for some family time together.
  • This could be a fun way to give the kids their Halloween costume
  • A printable Halloween game to play next! How about trying my fun Kids Zombie Halloween Escape Room.
  • Or perhaps a voucher for a pumpkin patch trip or pumpkin decorating supplies.

The prize doesn’t have to be expensive; it’s the excitement of finding it that makes this game magical. For me I believe it’s the memories you make with the kids that’s the ultimate goal. They really won’t care how much you spent on the prize, just that they had a lot of fun.

Can I reuse the treasure hunt next year?

Absolutely! Just store your printed clues in an envelope or folder, and next Halloween, you can reuse them by changing up the hiding spots. Because you can rearrange the order of the clues, the game feels new every time!
