I have to tell you about this super fun game I’ve been working on, a Kids Spy Escape Room! It’s a printable game that I put together for kids aged 8+, and honestly, it’s perfect for turning any party or family gathering into an adventure. The kids get to pretend they’re secret agents, solving puzzles, cracking codes, and searching for clues to save the day.

It’s one of those games that’s both super engaging, and I promise, it’s a total hit for birthdays or just when you want to do something fun at home. Want to know how it all works? Keep reading, because it’s going to be the game everyone’s talking about!
What makes this spy escape room game super fun is that it’s hands-on. The kids get to really feel like spies. They’ll be decoding secret messages, hunting for hidden clues. Bonus is I have put together some fun DIY printables that make it feel like the kids are stepping into their very own spy movie!
Here’s the best part: there’s no need to leave the house! It’s all printable, so you can set it up at home, and the kids can do it in teams or individually, depending on how you want to run it.
I have added in some cool little touches that make it even more exciting, like having the players create their spy names, and posing with some fun a photobooth props . They’ll feel like real agents on a mission the whole time.
So What’s the Mission?
Players take on the role of top-secret agents working to stop the evil Dr. Stinkbomb from releasing his awful fart gas. Along the way, they will be faced with different codes to crack as they race to uncover the final word needed to unlock a vault with the blueprints to the fart gas antidote.

Game Breakdown
Here’s a quick rundown of a few of the puzzles and printable pages you will find spy escape room kit. The kit can be played on a tabletop with no prep at all, a great option for a last-minute activity BUT, I really like to make the games interactive. I’ve put together lots of fun extras in the kit to help you create a real escape room experience at home.
Mission Brief & Spy Names

Players start by reading a spy letter and choosing their code name using the included spy name tag generator printables. For some Extra flair: Hand out folders labeled “Mission Briefing” with the letter and answer log inside.
Spy Keypad Number Puzzle

In this challenge, players are given a sequence of numbers that must be decoded to reveal a secret codeword. The trick? These numbers represent letters, just like on a classic mobile phone keypad. Each number corresponds to a set of letters:
- 2 = A
- 22 = B
- 222 = C
- 3 = D, 33 = E, 333 = F
…and so on.
Players must match the number patterns to the correct letters using this system. For example, if they see the number 7777, that would translate to S (the fourth letter under 7). Once all numbers are decoded, the players will have their codeword!
✍️ Use a UV Pen + Blacklight for a Hidden Clue
Nothing screams spy game like invisible ink! Write a hidden message using a UV Pen write the code players need to decipher on the DIY printable included in the kit, then place a blacklight torch nearby, or even better lock it inside a box! Kids will love using the torch to reveal the message. This simple DIY trick adds mystery and wow factor without much prep.

Spiral Decoder Spy Puzzle
This puzzle has two main components. You can keep the pages together or hide one half.
- The Puzzle Page – featuring a spiral with images around the outer edge.
- The Secret Code Page – needed to decode the images and reveal the answer.
Players must first decipher the images on the puzzle page. However, they’ll need the secret code page to complete the challenge. To increase the difficulty and fun why not try some of the following ideas:
- Lock away the secret code page inside a box, envelope, or small container using a 3-digit lock or key lock.
- On the back of the puzzle page, write a clue that tells players where to find the locked box and how to open it.
- The clue could be a simple math problem (e.g., 105 + 47 + 7 = the lock code).
- Or a riddle leading to a meaningful number (e.g., a birthday date).
- Or simply tape the key to lock on the back.
Small twists and additions like this add to the fun of the game and gives players an extra sense of achievement when they solve the puzzle. They are simple to implement and just kick the game up an extra level!

Spy Rotating Puzzle
In this simple yet satisfying puzzle, players must eliminate any letters that appear more than once, then use the remaining letters to reveal a final word. To enhance the experience, a tactile rotating wheel is included. Before players can solve the puzzle:
- They’ll need to align the wheels correctly to display all the letters.
- You can assemble the wheel ahead of time, or make it part of the challenge by having players put it together themselves.

TOP TIP: Lock a pair of scissors using a mini padlock or tie, and hide the key or a clue elsewhere in the game. Players must unlock the scissors before they can cut out and assemble the puzzle pieces.
Phone Spy Puzzle
This puzzle uses colored coordinates and a phone lock screen to reveal a secret word or code. The puzzle consists of two parts: A lock screen image showing a typical phone, with a dot pattern and a series of coordinates printed on a separate page. Each series of coordinate is color-coded to match the keypad.
Players must:
- Match the coordinate’s color to the keypad area on the lock screen.
- Follow the instructions (up, down, left, right) to move from one point to the next.
- Take note of the shape they made following the co-ordintaes, each one is a letter and will spell the final codeword. .
Add Extra Immersion with a Video Prop
To enhance the experience, I created a gif that you can display to represent the lock screen as a looping video on a real phone:
- Set the phone aside or hide it for players to discover during the game.
- Ensure the video loops continuously and disable screen lock in your phone settings so it stays active throughout the puzzle. Scan the QR code below to see how it looks.

Add a Real 3-Digit Lock for the Final Reveal
Take the final puzzle to the next level by using a real lockable box or bag! The kit includes a puzzle that reveals a three-digit code, perfect for setting a real combination lock. Just set your lock to the correct answer (185), and hide the final prize, certificates, or mission reward inside. The kids will feel like real secret agents cracking a secure vault!
These easy tweaks to the game turn your printable escape room into an unforgettable experience that feels straight out of a spy movie. You don’t need to go all-out, but if your kids love a challenge, they’ll absolutely love the extra twist!
What You’ll Need:
- Printed spy game material.
- Scissors and pens/pencils.
- Bright White Cardstock (gives a great finish!)
- Optional: UV pens, locks, blacklight, tablet/laptop (for GIF/video puzzles included in the download)
How to Make Your Kids Spy Escape Room Even More Fun!
1. Set the Scene with a Spy Headquarters:
If you really want to get your kids into the spy mood, turn your space into a “spy headquarters.”? Set up a table with mission dossiers, pens, and classified folders to make them feel like they’re about to get top-secret instructions.
Head to youtube for some use spy-themed music as background noise to set the tone—something suspenseful that makes it feel like they’re on a high-stakes mission!

Pro Tip: If you have any old suitcases, lock boxes, or even backpacks, use them to lock away puzzle pieces. You don’t need a fancy lock, a cheap dollar store one will do the trick!
2. Add Some Spy Gear:
What’s a spy mission without some cool spy gear, right? Included in the game is a spy name generator and spy name tags. To add a little something extra, how about supplying some spy sunglasses and ear pieces for that spy look, they can also double up as party favors! You can grab affordable spy party kits over on Amazon, but if you have a local party store, head over there and show the shop some love.
3. Spy-Themed Snacks:
Now, you can’t have a top-secret spy mission without some spy snacks to fuel the agents! Maybe you’ve got “invisible ink” lemonade (a fun colored drink) or spy cookies with secret messages written in code in frosting. Pinterest is a great place to look for spy-themed party food.
4. Add Mini Spy Missions into Your Game:
Take the game to the next level by adding a spy obstacle course in your home or backyard. Set up some basic spy challenges like dodging laser beams (using red yarn or string), or how about Nerf target practice? It’s an easy way to add a bit of physical activity and excitement to the game.

5. Celebrate with a Spy-Themed Prize!
What’s a mission without a reward for the team? After they solve the final puzzle and crack the code word, you can give out spy-themed prizes. This is a great time to let the kids lose with the photobooth, throw in some spy props or keep it simple by printing out the “Mission Complete” and other posters included in the kit.
