Fun Valentines Secret Message Activity

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all cards and chocolate. Sometimes it’s nice to have a simple activity that gives kids something a bit different to enjoy. Especially one that doesn’t need loads of prep or explanation.
This Valentine’s activity adds a small puzzle twist to the day by using a cipher wheel to decode Valentine’s-themed jokes. It’s quick to set up, easy to understand, and gives kids that satisfying moment of figuring something out for themselves. Nothing complicated, just a fun challenge that feels a little more interesting than a standard worksheet.
If you’re looking for a low-key Valentine’s Day activity that mixes curiosity, problem-solving, and a bit of light-hearted fun, this is a great place to start.
What’s a cipher Wheel?
The cipher wheel is what makes this Valentine’s printable a little more fun than a standard activity. Around the outside of the wheel, there are cute Valentine-themed images, while the inner wheel shows the alphabet. Each image lines up with a letter, and that’s the key to cracking the jokes.
To decode a message, kids simply match each image to the wheel and read the letter that sits underneath it. Once they get the hang of it, the process feels really satisfying and it’s super easy to follow. Just line up, read the letter, and watch as the joke reveals itself.
For the best results, it’s worth printing the wheel on card stock so it’s sturdy enough to turn easily. Use a split pin (or paper fastener) through the centre to attach the cover image to the wheel underneath. This lets the wheel spin smoothly and makes reading the letters much easier, especially for little hands.

- Printer I love the ink tank printers I will never go back to cartridges this HP one is what I use.
- Plain paper and something to write with for players to take notes
- Scissors
- Split pins or Brads to secure the decoder wheel.
