What’s a Mini Escape Room Game?

The mini-escape game is basically something I made up, LOL. I wanted to create a printable Father’s Day card and gift box that was something a little bit special to receive on Father’s Day. In a nutshell, the aim is to lock up your Father’s Day gift. To open it, those awesome dads have to solve three puzzles.

Why settle for the usual Father’s Day card when you can create a puzzle experience that Dad will never forget? It’s an easy way to get kids of all ages involved in creating something fun for Dad.

What You’ll Need:

Before you get crafting, you’ll need the following supplies:

  • Free Printable Father’s Day Kit: You can grab it from the bottom of the post.
  • Scissors: For cutting out the printables.
  • Pen or Pencil: To write your personal message inside the card.
  • Printer Paper: Bright white card stock is recommended for a professional finish.
  • Glue or Tape: Essential for assembling the gift box.
  • Three-Digit Lock (Optional): Use it to lock up the gift box. Available Amazon.
  • QR Code Scanner (If not using the real lock): For a digital twist.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Print the Game Material: Print out all the game materials. I like to use bright white card stock to give your projects a polished look.
  2. Assemble the Envelope: Carefully cut out and glue the edges to form the envelope. Young kids may need a little help with this. Top tip, place a pice of paper inside to stop the envelope from sticking to itself.
  3. Create the Father’s Day Card: Cut out the Father’s Day card, fold it in half, and write your own message inside. Perhaps you can find some fun dad jokes to include.
  4. Prepare the Envelope Content: Place the tie code card (digit two) inside the envelope. You can either display the “Father’s Day code” poster somewhere in the room or fold it and include it inside the envelope for Dad to find.
  5. Build the Gift Box: Cut out the gift box template, assemble it using glue, and fill it with goodies. Homemade treats like chocolate chip cookies are always a hit!
  6. Set the Lock: If you’re using a physical lock, set it to 361. Alternatively, attach the QR code gift tag to the gift box. When Dad scans the QR code, he’ll be prompted to enter the three-digit code online to unlock his gift.
  7. Present the Gift: Hand over the beautifully crafted envelope and gift box to Dad. This is the perfect way to reveal his fathers day surprise!

Father’s Day Mini Escape Puzzles

There are three puzzles that dad needs to solve before he can open his gift box and see the goodies inside. They are pretty simple to solve, the aim is to make this a fun little extra step. I should think it will take about ten minutes to solve, depending on how you hide the Father’s Day code.

Father’s Day Code?

You can’t have an escape room-style game without including a secret code of some kind! I wanted a fun way to reveal one of the digits for the lock. Look at this cute little dingbat font made up of different patterned ties. I created a poster and this special note written in the Father’s Day code. When deciphered, it will reveal one of the digits to unlock the box.

Father’s Day Card Puzzle

The kit includes a card with a clue on the reverse. I recommend that you print this page onto bright white card for a nice finish. You can put any message you like inside the card and pop it inside the matching envelope that is included in the kit.

To solve this puzzle all you need to do is follow the directions of the arrows starting from the star. When you reach the end of the route it will reveal one of the numbers used to open the lock. Make sure that you have a pen or pencil handy so the player can mark the correct path.

Alphabet Substitution

The final puzzle is another code. This time, the code is hidden at the bottom of the gift box. If the players aren’t careful, they may not spot it. You can step in at any time and offer a hint. When they spot the code, there is a hint on the envelope that says that each number represents a letter. In this instance 1=A, 2=B, etc.
