#1 Alphabet Cipher Wheel

This wheel includes uppercase letters on the larger wheel and lowercase letters on the smaller wheel. It’s perfect for:

• spelling out clue locations
• decoding full sentences
• revealing story-based hints

Because the full alphabet is included, you can spell out anything you like.

How to Encrypt a Secret Message

You’re about to send a secret message, exciting!

1. Choose a Key. The key tells you how many spaces to move the wheel and which direction to go. For this example, the key is 14 – right. (Anyone reading your message will need this key too.)
2. Line Up the Wheel. Place your cipher wheel so the same letters match on both circles. a under A, b under B, and so on.
3. Turn the Wheel. Turn the small (bottom) circle 14 spaces to the right. With this key, a now becomes o.
4. Write Your Secret Code.

• Find the letter you want to hide on the big (top) circle
• Write down the letter directly underneath it on the small circle
• Keep going until your whole message is written

You’ve now created a secret code.

How to Decode Your Secret Message

Someone has sent you a secret message, now its time to decode it.

1. Check the Key. You need the same key that was used to make the message. For this message, the key is 14 – right.
2. Line Up the Wheel. Start with the same letters matching on both circles.
3. Turn the Wheel. Turn the small (bottom) circle 14 spaces to the right.
4. Read the Message.

• Find each coded letter on the small circle
• Write down the letter above it on the big circle
• Do this for every letter

#2 Letters & Numbers Cipher Wheel

This version mixes letters and numbers, making it ideal for lock-based puzzles.

• assign numbers to letters
• decode a word that reveals a lock combination
• lead players from one puzzle straight to the next

#3 Blank Cipher Wheel (Endless Possibilities)

This is where you can really get creative. The blank wheel lets you add:

• shapes
• pictures
• themed icons
• custom words or symbols

Using Cipher Wheels in Treasure Hunts & Escape Rooms

You can use cipher wheels in so many ways, but one of my favourites is building an entire treasure hunt around them.

Each decoded message reveals the next clue location, creating a smooth flow through the game. It’s a fun twist on a traditional treasure hunt and works brilliantly for kids who love hands-on puzzles.

I’ve even created full treasure hunts that are entirely solved using cipher wheels, including my Easter and Pirate cipher wheel hunts. My kids absolutely loved these, especially as they were getting older the challenge made the game more exciting for them.
