Are you looking for a fun and festive way to give your family and friends their Christmas presents this holiday season? Look no further than an escape room game in an envelope. It’s the perfect way to make your Christmas morning even more exciting. Lock away your recipient’s present with a four-digit lock and hand them the envelope puzzle with the clues to open the lock. Let the games begin!

Set Up a Fun Envelope Escape

If you have never played an escape room game, this would be a fun mini-game for you to try. All the game material is contained inside an envelope that is attached to a gift that needs to be unlocked.

This free Christmas escape game puzzle is meant to add a little bit of mystery and fun to your gift-giving this holiday season. To play, print out the four puzzles and place them inside the printable envelope included in the kit. Then, give your recipient their present along with the envelope and watch their face light up as they try and solve each of them Once they have all four answers, they can use those numbers to unlock their gift.

Who Can Play The Game?

Feel free to use the kit for friends and family old and young. If you intend to use this on a gift for children under the age of eight I would suggest that you use the simpler set of puzzle clues and be on had to jump in and help if they need it.

The puzzles are not too tricky and you can print a few sets out and use for several recipients. If you are intending to use this for an escape room super fan the puzzles will probably be a little too simplistic, but it will still be a fun way to open their gift. If you are looking for some fun gift giving ideas for puzzle fans I take a look at my escape room gift ideas blog post.

To make things even more interesting, you can choose between easy or challenging puzzles depending on your recipient’s age and skill level. For example, one of my favourite puzzles uses a cypher wheel. I love adding them to my games. For older players, there is a long piece of text they need to decipher. For younger players all they need to solve is a single word.

I created the game to work alongside a real lock, most people have one knocking around in a dusty drawer somewhere. I chose a four digit lock as that is what I have floating around at home. If you don’t have a four-digit lock, you can also use our QR code gift tag instead. This printable tag will allow your recipient to unlock their present once they have solved all four puzzles. How cool is that?

WHAT PUZZLES ARE INCLUDED?

The puzzles in the free Christmas escape game are slightly different between the easy and more challenging. You will have the option to choose between the puzzles and you can mix and match them together.

  1. Players must read a piece of text to reveal a hidden message. Either reading different coloured letters on the letter or following a number sequence to reveal the message. This puzzle tells the players the order of the final four digit code.
  2. A simple crossword. Players fill in the crossword and then scramble different coloured letters to reveal the next number they need. Younger players may need some help with unscrambling the letters to create the words.
  3. There is a postcard. For the easy puzzle, players must decipher a single word using the decoder disk. For the more difficult game, players must follow arrows to reveal letters that spell the next number (there is a hint on the printable envelope).
  4. A simple jigsaw puzzle. Players count objects in a picture. To make this puzzle more difficult, the instructions are written in the decoder disc font for the harder puzzle. When you cut up the puzzle you can make this more difficult by cutting the picture into smaller pieces or easier by keeping the picture whole.
  5. The final puzzle uses a pigpen cypher code. The code is written on the outside of the envelope to help players. For the easier version, the clue is just written backwards so players can read the words using a mirror. The pigpen cypher is actually very simple. I have used this with 7-year-olds, and with a little guidance, they had no problems solving the code. Use your discretion when it comes to choosing the puzzles for your players.
